I have a guy I have been casually seeing for about 8 or 9 months now. He'll go through spurts where he won't respond to my messages for a day (sometimes two). (I don't bombard him with messages when he does this or ask him why he isn't responding. I usually just leave it be). But when he DOES resume texting me and I don't respond right away (usually a few hours, or in one instance a full day) or give him short one to two word responses, he suddenly blows up my phone with texts. Why?

He likes you enough to want to keep you around, but not enough to proactively reach out to you on a regular basis. By not calling him out, he’s internalized that his behavior is okay and you don’t have a problem with it. When you give short responses or don’t respond, he starts to fear losing you entirely, which makes him desperate to get back in your good graces. You gotta let him know that it makes you sad when you don’t hear from him or something of that sort. Your behavior is enabling his
He doesn't wanna lose is 2nd, 3rd, 4th or whatever option. He is just holding you on and warm.
I honestly would just ignore him and never answer back
Or make a scene and then ignore but most dudes aren't worth the energy
