Basically, he is saying that it is time for him to become Family Man. What he means is he must drive by you and wave, hit the U-Turn, and head back the direction he came. Destination being the home with the wife and focusing on the kids and building life there.

He basically laid the ground work for a struggled passion between you two as he slowly pulls away from the relationship. This seems like what he is saying.
