Does my crush really like me or is he just desperate?

My crush expressed his interest in me after he found out that I used to like him. Now he seems to be obsessed with the idea of dating me according to mutual friends and flirts with me pretty aggressively. I don't understand why he suddenly feels this way because I'm pretty sure he didn't find me attractive in the past. Could he only be desperate for affection and sex?
