Guys, Why would a guy talk badly about a woman to a mutual friend and compare them to other women he could be with instead?

My situation is a bit complicated. I was dating a guy for a few months and when we broke up I had a fling with one of his friends, the fling didn't progress because he felt his friend wasn't over me. We kept in touch for a few years, one day after a great conversation he asked if I was seeing anyone (I thought he knew I was back with the original guy; his friend) I told him that I was back with his friend. He ghosted me after that. A few years later I noticed he unblocked me, I reached out as my relationship had ended. I told him I wanted to talk again and that I still had unresolved feelings. He called his friend (we are still very close friends) and was really annoyed/angry. He went on a long rant -- talked badly about me and listed reasons as to why he could be with better women. More successful and attractive women. "Why would I talk to her when I could talk to _________" I have no idea what happened here since there was no fight or negative interaction between us.
