He does not seem to be taking whatever hints you are sending in his direction. Tell him directly. If you know he hasn't heard the message you are sending with smoke signals, then accepting dates with him looks like you are leading him on (and I believe that is not your intention.) Yes, being direct may risk losing him as a friend, but continuing with him msunderstanding your interest doesn't lead to anything good, either.
