Whenever I see a guy peeing in public he's holding his thing. There's nothing to aim for, it's not like there's a toilet or urinal there, all your pee is going on the ground anyways.

Also why do you take the whole thing out, why not just the tip?

I usually try to find something to aim at: be it a rock, some grass...

I take out the whole thing for stability, and to create some distance from the tip to the clothing. When the stream gets weak at the end, having just the tip out may cause some pee to get into the clothing.

We guys hold "the whole thing" to make sure the pee goes where it should, not on our pants or shoes or somewhere else. If I'm in the woods and have to pee, I usually go to a tree and aim for its base, watering the tree.
