He's an angry soul living in an unhappy world. You're the closest to him, so naturally you'll get the blunt end of his wrath.

Fortunately there is a way out for you that doesn't involve breaking up with him. Simply tell him exactly how he's making you feel and you don't know what to do. It helps if you can bring up some tears and break down a little when you do it.

Maybe if he sees exactly how much of an ass he's been and how much it's affecting the person he loves the most, he'll ease off a little

If it's that toxic, and you're that unhappy, you need to leave.
It could be down to mental health problems, guilt, pain, stress or just the fact that he's a coward and trying to get you to break up with him. So he doesn't look like the "bad guy".

Either way, from the limited amount of information you've given, it does not sound healthy, and you need to evaluate your own mental health and weigh up the pros and cons of your relationship.

If there are more cons than pros and you're unhappy every single day, you should really know the answer.
The fact that you are having to ask this question, tells me that you may already have an inkling on what to do, but just need that push.

Re your update, let me ask... Why do you stay? This leads me to think that you're scared of being alone and he treats you like this because he's a coward and he knows you'll stay and put up with it.
YOU are the only one that can make a change, by leaving him.
IF he wants you, he will try and get you back. If not, there's your answer.
