I wouldn't say we forget, we can put aside and compartmentalize.
Guys have a "nothing box" where we can go, and we don't think or feel. we go into "logic" and distracted modes where we aren't feeling. We're just wired different... and not all are the same. As well, we can be avoidant.

Females are more likely to hold onto the fantasy of what could have been, while males tend to focus more on reality than fantasy. The fantasy is hard to let go, while confronting ourselves with reality makes it harder to hold onto something that doesn't exist.
