If I find a person interesting I will absolutely chat with them daily, be it a girl or a guy. Close relationships need but be romantic in nature. That being said, if you want something beyond platonic with the guy, ask him how he feels or if he is also interested.

Having a conversation with him to ask if he's interested in more than friendship isn't chasing him. Having the conversation will establish if he's interested and if he's not you can continue with the friendship knowing that's what you've got, but if he is you get your something more. It's a win win
