Am I being rejected or is this reasonable?

I’m not sure if this guy is actually telling the truth but we recently started seeing each other. Which he asked me out first. Well this weekend, I decided well let me reciprocate and show him I’m interested. Well he took a while to text back. Which I ended up doing my own thing and went out to the movies. He texted back and apologized for responding late. Then he explained his self and said he recently had a family member past and that’s all he’s really been focused on and he apologized again. Well I told him no worries and I understand and gave my condolences. He said he meant a lot that I understood and he said if it was fine with me, he would hit me up soon. So I was wondering like was he letting me down gently or does he actually mean what he says? I mean I appreciate him texting back instead of ghosting me. I don’t really ask guys out because I feel like this always happens. That’s why I usually sit back and let the guy make the dates. But at the same time, what if it’s just when he feels like seeing me? This isn’t suppose to be a casual hook up. Which he knows.

You might be over analyzing it. It seems like he's mourning over his lost family member, and when he has time or something, he’ll set up a date. I wouldn’t think too much about it.
