What does it mean when a guy says he has power over you?

It may mean he's a narcissist. If he tells you he has power over you, he's likely trying to play some mind game to convince you you're weak. Narcissists are good at this. He may make you believe you can't do anything without him and that you'll never find anyone else like him. These people are dangerous and often strip you of your dignity.

Your self-esteem goes down and you lose sight of who you are. They can bring out the worst in you because they mess with your emotions and try to make you angry. These types of guys string you along like a puppet on a string. They will make rude comments just to see how you react. They find your reactions amusing. Narcissistic people will never admit to this and you're always wrong, no matter what.

I've had friends that were in relationships like this and not one of them ended well, at least for the ones that did end. Girls get sucked into these types of relationships because the guy is good at telling her what she wants to hear, and the moment she shows any sign of weakness, he stomps on her, humiliates her, and destroys her life.

I lived with an aunt that was a narcissist. I lost everything I owned because I only catered to her needs and not mine. Narcissists are well aware of what they're doing. Just be careful if you are in a situation where someone believes they have power over you. They will destroy you and everything you love. Hope this helped.

You're welcome. I know I'm being a little too direct. This is just what it sounds like to me. Hopefully I'm wrong, but usually when someone just blurts out something like that, telling you they have power over you, it's another way of them saying, "I control you".

Yeah, it sounds like you're conflicted. Maybe you could try writing a pro and con list and ask yourself if he's worth sticking around for. Honestly though, if you're being controlled, you can do better. A lot better. I had a friend once that used to say, "No one is worth your tears and when you find someone who is, they won't make you cry."

With what you're going through, I've lived this. There is one thing you can do if you really want to find out what you're dealing with. You could ask him why he believes he has power over you. Chances are, you're a kind and considerate person that tries to accept people for who they are. Narcissists usually prey on kindness.

If that's what's happening, you deserve better. These people prey on kindness and attention. Sometimes when love finds you, it brings the wrong person along. Though, that person will do everything in their power to make you believe they're right for you. Having your heart broken is horrible pain, but it sounds like your heart's already breaking in a way. (I'm sorry, I'm a writer and sometimes the mushy stuff just comes out, lol).

And these people that give advice, always saying, "You have to love yourself before anyone else can love you," they don't understand that sometimes we can't love ourselves unless we know someone else loves us. It's OK to fear the loss of love, but if you're wasting your love on someone who's not deserving of it, one day there could be a guy out there that will be deserving, and he will do everything he can to make sure he proves that too you.

Is English his second language? His word choice is really weird. Saying that you have power over someone, but then saying that you don't want to control them is just odd because the word "power" implies control. So why would you say that you have the ability to control someone but then say you don't want to do it?

No he's American man. Well the definition of power is having an influence over someone. As in behavior. So I'm not sure why he would use the word power.
