I mean depends what kind of relation you two have. An easy way would be to go shopping with him. You could also ask him in public about other peoples clothing style. If you go on a date where he decided the place, ask him what would fit for the occasion.

On the other hand if you are close and already in a relationship I dont think it is wrong to straight up ask him.
