For the most part, when people move on, they focus on their new present and future rather than the past. It's not that you've been forgotten, but you're no longer the primary focus. Everyone we encounter adds to what makes us unique as individuals. Taking away any of our past would change the person we are today.
If you want to be remembered in a special way, identify how you want to be remembered. Do you want to be remembered for skills you have passed on to others? Do you want to be remembered as a role model of quality personal traits? Do you want to be remembered for your accomplishments? Know what you want people to remember, and then do your best to make those things memorable.
Though I may plant a seed, once it's planted, it gets all the credit for anything that develops. People often give me credit for how my son has turned out. I clearly state I may have provided him a stable basis upon which to grow and have opened some doors for him, but he was the one who walked through those doors and created a name for himself. I don't take credit for his accomplishments.
A while ago, a woman came up to me in a store and said "I came to see you 20 years ago, and what you shared back then finally makes sense to me." I can share knowledge, but I can't make people accept that knowledge or change. They get all the credit for what they have done.
