Nothing is going to be super obvious until you have talked a bit. If he's only talking about fun and/or sex, it's not serious. If he's talking about the future (with you in it) or asking questions about your past or your morals and values, or your life goals, or similar things, then he is vetting you for a serious relationship. That's how you know, and it often takes a few dates to see those signs. Most people would be too freaked out if someone started asking those questions on the first date or even before.
