I did... sort of.
My first girlfriend was a friend for two years.
We met because of a fluke...
When I was in high school, the school year was broken up into 2 semesters: Fall and Spring.
So, for example, my freshman year was 1977-1978 and the 1st Semester was Fall 1977 and the 2nd Semester was Spring 1978.
When I was a freshman in high school, I was supposed to take Health which is a one-semester class.
I was scheduled to take Health in Spring 1978 aka the 2nd Semester of that year.
However, at the same period for the Fall 1977 (1st Semester), I took Industrial Design 1A (drafting).
I loved drafting so much, I asked to have my schedule changed so I could take Industrial Design 1B in the 2nd Semester and thus take Health some semester in my sophomore year (1978-1979).
So, I took Health as a sophomore when most kids take it as a freshman. For me, I was assigned to take Health in Spring 1979, the 2nd Semester that year. For my Fall 1978 class, I took Typing which is something that they probably don't teach in high school anymore.
It was in Typing that I met my future girlfriend. She sat right behind me. In the Spring 1979 semester, we were in the same Health class too. So, we became rather friendly.
While she was an attractive girl, there was nothing extraordinary about her - certainly not where we came from, but she was rather attractive compared to the country at large. Anyway, I did not think of her in that way - as a potential girlfriend - and, in fact, helped her get a boyfriend before me.
However, when I was a senior in high school and she was a junior, she asked me to tutor her in physics.
She was smart and really didn't need the tutoring, but I was over her house quite a bit.
Eventually, we became an official couple much to my surprise (I was the "shy guy" Catholic boy and she was the assertive Jewish American Princess although she was sweet and not bitchy at all.)
We broke up once when I was a senior, but she still went to my prom with me.
When she was a senior and I was a freshman in college, we became a couple again and I really learned to appreciate her distinct beauty and personality. (My college was a STEM school so it was a real sausage party; almost no girls and the ones there didn't look very attractive.)
However, she dumped me at the end of my first semester in college, Fall 1981.
It was my first broken heart and I learned what real love is.
We are still on somewhat friendly terms and we exchange emails when I email her every year on her birthday.
Someone's likes and dislikes can change over time, as can certain traits in both parties.
