Define “mean”? Because being a mean woman has so many definitions for a man. A man defines a woman who isn’t easy to get in bed “mean” a girl who rejects their advances “mean” a woman who is assertive about what she wants “mean” too many definitions.

Assuming you mean a woman with a nasty attitude who’s just mean spirited, push over guys might like this type of woman because she’s assertive. Dominant men also like mean women. To be honest from my observation there is no general answer as to why a man chooses a mean woman. I’ve seen men from all walks of life choose these type of women, especially men in positions of power. Maybe that’s just their type.

I believe only men that get turned on by domineering and controlling women would prefer mean women.

It’s a kink. You can find submissive men that love that dynamic.

Whether over time or from the start, they’re just wired that way.

Most men would feel miserable in that kind of arrangement though — so it’s definitely not for everyone.

Because they know that the guys who are really sweet will always be there, because we want to keep kissing their asses, but since we're not suitable for a sexual relationship, they need to date more masculine men, as well, and those kind of guys aren't usually as nice as we are.
