It's going to vary from guy to guy. Because guys don't deal with there feelings equally. First off the word "scared" is insulting. I'd word it as "lacks trust". You have to understand at your age probably a dozen women (at least) have already betrayed that trust. He has no incentive to, but plenty of reasons not to share his thoughts and feelings freely.

All you can do is try to provide him an environment to feel safe in sharing. You try to force it and you're going to do the opposite of what you hope to accomplish.
