Your breakup might have contributed to his struggles, but I'm sure that he probably just had a lot of life drama in general. Is there a reason you can't ask him about this directly?

He might, from time to time. For what it's worth, his post did say that his journey was filled with challenges. My guess is that drama with your relationship is probably part of what he was thinking about.
