Why did my ex stop staring at me?

Me and my ex had a messy break up 9 months ago

Since then he has had a girlfriend and whenever I would pass by him he would stare into my eyes without looking away and I would always catch him looking at me from a distance

all of a sudden he stopped doing that and would avoid making eye contact with me and going the same hallways as I go

why would he all of a sudden stare at me then stop if he says he didn’t want to talk to me anymore?

Because he finally figured out that is probably not a good idea when he has a girlfriend. If it was such a messy breakup then I don't know why you two are staring or talking to each other. I mean it is good if you could reconcile and be somewhat friendly but if it was that bad of a breakup in the first place I am not sure why he would have ever stared at you. I figured you would ignore each other from the start. He is your ex and in a relationship so if it were me I would just let them be and move on with my life. I don't tend to think about exes nor want to talk to them.
