Yeah I think you have to take someone as genuine when they say that. As long as they aren't repeating the same mistakes over and over I think you need to trust the person. I guess it also depends on what they are referring to. If it isn't anything major (like cheating) then I would take them at their word. There is that old saying of trust someone until they give you a reason not to. If it was a one off mistake or whatever happened then I am likely to let them prove to me that they can do better next time. I tend to give people the benefit of doubt until they prove me wrong.
