What does it mean when a guy friend says I deserve better?

My friends and I were at dinner. I have a crush on one of my guy friends. I recently broke up with my ex and started explaining why I broke up with him. After I explained, my friend I have a crush on says “can I be honest with you? You can do better” Then he explained why he thought that (my ex wasn’t engaging with or trying to get to know my friends). Even though he had only met him once, he knew I deserved better. I thought it was really sweet. But I think he’s just saying that as a true, good friend and I’m looking too much into it since I have a crush on him.

That’s what I was kind of thinking. Not sure what to do to see if he’s into me. He’s really nice to me and has called me funny, nice, and real homie in front of our friends kind of randomly.

Because I don’t think he sees me that way. He sends me mixed signals. However, when I told him I had a boyfriend, he was saying “oh who is it?” “I have to meet this guy” “When are we going to meet him?” but he said he was happy for me. We’ve fooled around in the past but didn’t want to continue but we’re still really good friends. He bought me a birthday present and pays for my food sometimes. But he’s just a nice and generous person all around. Not sure if he is actually interested in me.

Let me tell you from firsthand experience by how he's acting, he likes you. He probably thinks of you as a really good friend, but at the same time still is interested in you romantically. And the best thing about you two is, if you did date, and it didn't work out, you could probably still be such great friends again after, and be even closer.

But can he like me even if he’s sleeping with another person? I heard from my friend who is also friends with him. But that relationship is strictly sexual. We don’t text or talk except for when we’re all planning to meet up as a group. I’m always thinking about him though, kinda sucks. I would like to believe he likes me. I just don’t know how to get closer to him outside of our hangouts with friends because I don’t want to bother him either. But I can see us still being great friends if it didn’t work out, I would say we’re mature enough.

That just means he has actual feelings for you, and either he wants to do these sexual things with you, but thinks you don't like him back, so he does it with this friend with benefits, or he feels he can't do sexual things with you because of how close and great a friendship you two have and he is trying to respect you because he doesn't want to ruin that, even if he has feelings for you. If you two dated, would you get sexual with him?

I feel that it’s because we’re good friends that he doesn’t want to ruin it. I admire him so much I can’t help but like him, he’s a great person. Yes I would get sexual with him, he’s so attractive to me

Then bring up your friendship to him and gently tell him that you wouldn't mind being more than close friends, and that nothing would ruin your friendship.
