Sometimes they are needed because you can't convey tone in a text.

"Well that seems like a good idea" without any emoji could convey either approval or "you're an idiot". That's an extreme example obviously, but when you have to resort to texting (in a meeting or whatnot) and can't speak, you have to work with the limitations of technology. Now your guys seems barely literate, so that's a different issue than the fact he used an emoji, but I can't say "you pretty" has particular depth so I'm not sure what you're asking "what does that even mean" in relation to in that sentence.

I didn't realize there was an age limit for them. When I first got online, I was 43 and everyone I knew and talked to online used them and a lot of those people were older than me! I stopped using them about 8 or 10 years later just because I just didn't feel like it, anymore. Besides, I was only using 3 or 4 of them. Now, there's so fucking many of them and I have no clue what most of them mean! It doesn't help at all that, when they DO show up, they're so small I can't even SEE what they are!! Occasionally, I'll use a sad or smiley face but, that's about it.

Man, we can’t use emojis? I feel persecuted, lmao. Emojis are ESSENTIAL for indicating tone for the typed words. We’d have endless misunderstandings without them. Anyone can use emojis, don’t ever let anyone emoji-shame you!
