Guys, If he actively tries to be close to me when he doesn’t have to, can I be mostly sure he’s into me?

A very handsome guy I work with is very shy (as I was informed by his friend and my coworker who grew up with him) and when he first met me he was incredibly awkward and nervous around me. He would be smiling and then he would see me and his smile would immediately go away. When he saw me he would immediately run away and look back to see if I was still there. He would stutter his words when he looked at me and try not to face me if we were in the same room. Eventually he started to warm up to me because I went up to him and introduced myself/made casual conversation with him. Now he makes the effort to sit by me during our meetings, smiling at me when I’m not looking. He stands behind me and really close to me even when he doesn’t have to. It’s just very strange behavior to me while I get the feeling he likes me, it’s hard to be sure because he doesn’t say anything to me. I also get the feeling like if I were to ask him upfront he would clam up, as he usually does when I make the effort to talk to him. I really like him too and would like to further the relationship but I don’t know how to approach an incredibly nervous guy. I usually am very outgoing and I just get the impression that that would scare him off. I think him wanting to be near me is his way of showing interest but if he’s silent I don’t know how to get him to ask me out.
