Why would a guy suddenly tell me that he didn’t pay for a rose he gave me earlier in the evening?

Last night I went out with my coworkers to celebrate by last day at the office (I need a break from work and I want to go travel for a few months). We went to a restaurant, and then a bar and later an other one to go dancing. A man came with a bouquet of roses to sell. One of my coworkers gave me one, he asked me if I was happy and I responded “yes really happy !”

I saw it as a nice gesture, him giving me a flower for my last day with them. I didn’t think much of it. That coworker has always been nice to me, just in a friendly way. Later we wanted to leave to go to a club to continue dancing. That coworker thought of leaving because he had to take a flight the next day. We convinced him to stay a bit more and come dance with us. I put my hand on his back, maybe I was too tactile and I wonder if that’s why he got upset later.

We arrived at the club and out the blue, laughing he told me that he didn’t pay for that rose, it was given to him (I’m pretty sure I saw him paying the man but anyways). I said “oh, ok, that’s good” But I don’t know.. what was the point of him telling me that? I thought it was kind of rude, like he wanted me to know that it wasn’t a romantic gesture. But I didn’t even try anything with him. Yes I find him good looking and I surely look at him sometimes, but I try to be respectful and not creepy. He has a girlfriend and would have never tried anything with him. What is your guy opinion on this? If you were him, why would you have said that?
