It took him a while to start talking about anything personal going on with him. But yesterday he mentioned that he was going through a divorce and how it affected him. I’m not dating him by the way, just friends. Would a guy open up like that with a woman they fancy?

Not always. Sometimes it’s nice to feel heard, listened to, so if you’re good with those things then he feels comfortable confiding in you. I’d look for other, more significant signs.

Per your update, I don't know if talking about his divorce is significantly vulnerable, but in any case I wouldn’t advise taking interest in a man going through that. He may not be emotionally available, or even interested in investing into a brand new relationship after getting out of one. Especially if it was tumultuous, toxic, it could keep him from wanting to be with someone in a serious way right now.

Yeah I know that. But it was 2 years ago it happened. I don’t want a relationship at the moment myself anyway. He also mentioned other stuff going on with him. I’m not sure. He also mentioned how he got a disciplinary at work which he seemed to stutter a lot whilst trying to explain and seemed nervous/vulnerable talking about it.

Oh okay, you said he was going through a divorce so that sounds present tense. Anyway, you may still want to look for other signs of interest, assuming you are into him and that’s what you want. This isn’t the best one, mainly because opening up isn’t always significant just because it’s a man.

It could easily be a friend zone thing. Yes, some guys will expose a pseudovulnerable face to reel you in, but it's a really cynical way of getting a woman to sleep with you.

It's a nice thought. But you cannot trust a woman you develop feelings for. Because if you know it odds are so does she to. And there is one constant in this world. If a woman knows you have taken a liking to her she WILL exploit that.

So if a guy opens up to you, it's most likely because he has no feelings for you whatsoever.

But know that men would like to open up to women we care about. But we're time and again by your gender not to.
