As an example, your response below. My example would be, your dad doesn't want to see you make a decision that puts you into a bad situation and neither will a guy interested in you.

Both will be concerned for your safety so are they both acting like they care? Or do you see that as controlling?

The context would matter here. In most case they are trying to fulfill the traditional role of protector. What you may describe as controlling is just them trying to keep you safe

In what ways? Worries for your safety? That is a role your partner and father should take on. Plenty of other things that overlap. That doesn't mean someone is acting like your dad. Maybe you are taking someone being mature and good to you as someone trying to be your dad.
