What does it mean when a guy asks if we are friends?

A guy I am decently good friends with asked me this. We play the same sport, in the same group of friends. We were both at a party yesterday and for a few minutes we were alone and he asked me- “We are friends right?” And I responded “Yeah” and he said something like “Good” or “Cool” Sounds like he was asking for clarification or something but why would a guy asks this?
