A guy who’s been flirty in the past but thinks you’re not into him. Is this a shy or introverted thing?
+1 ySometimes, having eye contact with some particular people crossed in daily life may lead, for some mysterious reasons, depending on general circumstances and involved persons, to misunderstandings and embarrassment. This happens sometimes when I'm in a public transport and let my gaze wander a bit around me.
A caught glance hold a little longer may already have different meanings according the person and the situation, but in any case as if something should need to be said or communicated. In a public transport one has not always the opportunity to look somewhere else because of the crowd, and sure enough from time to time I catch the gaze of some lady... The more I try not to seem insistant, the more some slight embarrassment arises... Actually the best is sometimes just to smile... ;0)

Not really.
A guy avoiding eye contact simply could be he doesn't want to come across as a creep by looking at u, so he avoids eye contact.
He doesn't want to lead u on by making u think he's into u, if he's not.
I personally try not to make eye contact with a girl I'm not attracted to because I don't want to lead her on...32 Reply- +1 y
@Loner111 That's been what I've experienced/always assumed. I assume if a guy breaks eye contact he's taken or not interested. I notice guys tend do the look/look away/look thing when they are interested and not sure about initiating.
Asker+1 yThat’s what he used to do with me. He would intentionally give me these looks like eyeing me playfully, the looking then looking away then back again. But I shut down the flirting and he went to avoiding eye contact, or sometimes he wouldn’t, which is why I asked the question at all
Anonymous(30-35)+1 ySure in high school. Now if a guy is avoiding eye contact as an adult he has a better idea of social cues, dating and dealing with women to some extent. I’d also like to assume he’s not slow, so if there’s been some sort of flirty interactions in the past then he knows you like him. So to avoid your eyes is sending a message. It’s saying ‘no thanks’.

Asker+1 yHe used to flirt with me but I didn’t really flirt back & I sort of called him out on it instead of just asking him out, etc. so he backed off after that and started avoiding the eye contact
Opinion Owner+1 yYou won’t get forward when you keep looking back. He “used” to flirt, meaning it’s no longer relevant if it isn’t happening in current time. I say this because you don’t know what’s happened in his life between then and now. Sure we could blame it on your fallout, but there could be other logical reasons as well. Like he could’ve thought it was fun to flirt with you in the beginning and then outgrew it, he could’ve even met some other woman and that’s where his focus is at. But whatever the case, regardless of you calling him out or whatever-whatever, you have to live in current time so that you can move on and not give this person so much space in your mind to live rent free. I also want to note that I’m saying this with nothing but respect, I am just a blunt individual because sometimes that’s what people need to hear.
Opinion Owner+1 yAlso, put him aside for a moment and ask yourself what sort of man you want as a boyfriend vs what guy you are dealing with now. Your original post is already ending with excuses, like shyness or whatever. In reality, don’t you want a man who has the balls to approach you or ask you out? Especially if you are shy and not outgoing yourself? Two shy people makes for the most awkward, slow, frustrating relationship. Opposites are truly a more healthy dynamic, so they can do what you can’t. So if nothing were to come from you and this guy, I want you to think about the fact that maybe it is simply for the better because he wasn’t willing to step up the way you need him to. Even just to resolve that fallout or whatever.
Asker+1 yI totally respect the honesty and you’re 100% right. He’s my manager at work and he shouldn’t have even been behaving flirtatiously at all, especially if he wasn’t serious, etc. so I’m not sure why he even bothered in the first place. I hadn’t done or said anything to make him think it was wanted or welcome and it was very out of the blue for him so I don't know what warranted it or what changed
Opinion Owner+1 yOhhh! That makes a lot more sense. Flirting in the office is a matter of convenience, in my opinion. You work together, see each other every day, both straight, plus he’s a guy. I just think that as your manager he got some sense and realized he can’t be doing all that or risk losing his job. The other things I mentioned previously could be catalysts as well, who knows for sure. In any case, it’s stopped now and maybe it’s for the better.
Yes, they do. Not sure why the people in the comments are saying they don’t, they absolutely do, lol.

+1 yI've been brought up to always look directly into the eyes of anyone I talk to, and that is what I do, but In some cultures it is considered rude to keep eye contact.

+1 yA guy I know would argue that shy guys do; however, I’d argue that any guy who likes you enough will cut the crap and make it happen.

+1 yReasons a guy might avoid making eye contact with you:
1. He's attracted to you, and shy.
2. He thinks you're creepy.
3. Someone told him that you're obsessed with him.
4. He was at the post office recently, and one of the people on the "wanted" poster looks a lot like you.
5. He's too busy staring at your boobs.
6. His pet hamster went missing, and the next day your lunch bag had little brown and grey hairs on it.
7. He watched the first three episodes of The Acolyte, and he hasn't gotten over the shock of how bad they were.
8. He suspects you might be a werewolf.
9. He's trying to make eye contact with you, but his eyes point in weird directions so you can't tell.
10. He's trying to hold in a fart.

+1 yIn any scenario it depends on the guy. If the guy is more shy and not confident, he will likely avoid eye contact. Confident guys don't tend to avoid eye contact no matter how attracted he is to the girl. If he was flirty in the past, but thinks you're not into him, it's likely he's attracted to you and shy now that he knows he likely has no shot with you.
10 Reply I definitely will. I get really shy around women I like. I really want to look at them, but I don't want them to think I'm staring and get weirded out. I'm scared of coming across as creepy, so I avoid eye contact.
10 Reply1.8K opinions shared on Guy's Behavior topic. Not usually. If a guy is attracted to you, even if he tries to avoid eye contact his glance will still wander towards his object of interest. The stronger the interest the harder it is not to look.
20 ReplySome do some don't. Some also avoid eye contact with unattractive women... So don't make any assumptions based on that indicator.

+1 yno. he will if he's insecure and nervous. he "may" get nervous when he's into you but he doesn't have to. not everyone is like that. so it's not a good rule of thumb.

+1 yAs someone with autism, you could be a total stranger to me, or someone I would literally die for, and the amount of eye contact I'd give you would be roughly the same.

+1 yPossibly. But it's also true he will avoid eye contact with you if he's not attracted.
So not making eye contact doesn't tell you much.

+1 yI personally don't. I looked plenty of my crushes directly in the eyes without any problem. Doesn't mean that my mouth wasn't dry and my heart wasn't beating fast, though. lol.
