Why would a guy show you attention when he’s talking to someone else?

He knew he was talking to someone and I started liking him and thinking he was genuine just for him to fall for her… I feel played.. like why do that

This is very normal. But I'm with you. I don't get into relationships with girls if they're messing with other dudes at any point. They automatically get put in the short term relationships category. You can decide for yourself how to play these situations, but they're completely normal.

I think I'm in support of the talking stage. It gives me a chance to feel a girl out for what kind of person she is. When I see the red flags, I can either move on or just keep them at a distance. When I don't, I put them on a path to a real relationship.

To minimize the chances that they develop strong feelings. I wouldn't want to lead them on, knowing that they're not going to ever be an LTR.

No, that's not how it works. The 'talking stage' doesn't mean you are loyal to one person. That defeats the whole idea of it. For you to say he played you is not true at all. Stop blaming him and be accountable.
If you're smart, in the future you won't be a part of any stupid talking stage and you can avoid situations like this.

Because he kept his options open. Both of you seem like you didn’t discuss what it is both of you were going for. Maybe he’s turned off by the lack of discussion and went to date someone he’s more comfortable with
