Have you ever tried to fake an accent to appear as someone else?

After hearing about the recent Brooke Scofield and Clinton Kane drama and how he was faking his Australian accent (and lied about like a thousand other things) it reminded me of this guy I knew in college. Sophomore year, we’re both part of the theater program and set-building, and he speaks with a British accent. I’m a little surprised that someone British would come to this tiny little school in the middle of nowhere with no real acclaim like a state school but I don’t question it. A week goes by and suddenly the British accent is gone, replaced by an American accent. When I asked someone about it they revealed that he had been faking it the entire time and got caught because people overheard him speaking to his mom on the phone in an American accent. I can’t imagine being so desperate to reinvent yourself that you would try to pretend to be from an entirely different country.

Some Americans are so desperate to stand out from the crowd, they are running these weird race/heritage claims. I had a couple of them tell or write me how „they were basically German“. So I ask them, were you born in Germany? No. Have you ever lived in Germany? No. Do you speak the German language? No. They based their whole identity on some great-grandfather who immigrated in 1901. 🤦‍♂️
Just to clarify, there are some really interesting cultural enclaves, like the Texas Germans or Pennsylvanian Dutch.

Oh yeah, my family has ancestral roots in the Maitland clan in Scotland. We visited their castle one summer ages ago, I’d never felt so at home in another country. It was easy to see why so many Scottish immigrants moved to the Appalachian area in America, the landscapes were remarkably similar.

One cultural thing about America is we know we’re a country of immigrants and we want to honor our roots. That’s why those people called themselves german, because that’s their family roots.

I'm from Philly where we say yous. I lived 10 years in Texas where they say y'all. Last week I told a business associate "y'all" so they would understand and I immediately wanted to kill everyone in the room.

But to your story what is an "American" accent when the country is thousands of miles wide with dozens of different accents?

Very interesting. Nobody in America talks like that. Like the News. They have to go to school to learn how to talk like that. That's a very fake sounding accent to most Americans and foreign people think that's how we talk. Wow. My mind is blown.
