Do guys mean anything if they send girls a smiley face?

My boss is a guy and I notice that he likes to send me smiley faces. It is odd because often guys don't use smiley faces and he is in his early 30s- why do guys use smileys?

Just the straight forward, common sense meaning of the emoji.

People use emojies to keep things light. I wouldn't look into it any deeper than that.
