My boss is a guy and I notice that he likes to send me smiley faces. It is odd because often guys don't use smiley faces and he is in his early 30s- why do guys use smileys?
It could be. Like you said most men don’t do things like this because to many of us that’s “gay.” Stupid. It’s not masculine. But when a man is infatuated w a girl he will do things he usually doesn’t do that aren’t seen as masculine. So he’s sort of letting that barrier down w you if he likes you. But too depending on the type of man he is, if he’s feminine or gay it may just be his thing to do stuff like that. I think even if males did this type of thing you’re more likely to see it from younger boys than older men.

With women I'll sometimes do so in text, since most who I've known in life may wonder endlessly how I was feeling when texting them. So, when I'm genuinely happy or cheerful, it's as a courtesy to them, to prevent needless wondering. With men, it's rare and only if the situation seems tense, to show goodwill to prevent a pointless fight. That said, there are those who see kindness as weakness, and for them, it's utterly inappropriate.
I’ve only ever really know guys to use emojis in general if they’re trying to mirror a woman they’re interested in if she uses them. Sometimes it’s a way for guys to show their I guess softer side. I don’t use emojis really at all in text messages unless I really know that person bc otherwise in general texting I think it’s pointless. We don’t know the content of the messages or context. Best advice just kind of ignore it unless it becomes inappropriate and personal route in conversation.

There’s no deep meaning behind it. And age doesn’t matter when sending emojis. It’s just a smiley face.
