Guy says he can't date coworkers, so why is he asking around about my relationship status?

I got pissed off since this guy was the one flirting first. I didn't initiate, really. He seemed nervous and was genuinely shy. Yknow, trying to help me. Brushing up against me. He wouldn't strike up a conversation, but catch him staring.

I admit I also felt some good chemistry. So after I quit the job (already planned to happen). But I hate beating around the bush. So I asked him out. He said yes.

Then he stepped back and said he can't date coworkers. But, I caught wind that he was talking about me asking him out. And he was asking about my relationship status.

This pisses me off a LOT. Is he just full of himself and stroking his ego?
