My boyfriend “jokes” about kicking my cat?

My boyfriend said in conversation that he would beat/kick my cat if he misbehaved. He said it was a joke. I told him in response that if he kicked my cat, I would kick him back. An eye for an eye. He then acted shocked and said I was out of order.

Should I take this as a red flag, or is this a small thing to get annoyed about?
