Why will a guy confess to you about using other girls to get over or get you out their mind?

Somehow this has literally been said to me twice, And I don't understand a guys point in mentioning it, It doesn’t make me feel any better at all.

The first time this was said to me was by a ex that had slept with another woman while we weren’t dating but he had said he wanted to work on himself for me, He did change but it was too late and I had found out that he had slept with this woman while he was supposed to be changing.

I confronted him about it and he had said that he was pretending she was me because his dxck had struggled to even get up for her and it was the reason she had claimed that his sex was ass. I ignored him after but then he had texted this whole paragraph talking about “no one can replace you ever” and technically said that any other girls he talked to he was playing with and doing them dirty because they weren’t me and that she was the only one he slept with.

The second time it was with another boyfriend, And we were really starting to struggle a bit so we eventually took a break when we had came off the break i asked him if he had talked to other girls he said no but then i took his phone and saw dating apps which he responded to by immeaditaly deleting them and not letting me see the messages or profile, I asked him why he did that and he looked me in my eyes and said he was tryna get his mind off me I mostly wanted an apology or something but i had asked him if it had worked which he responded to by saying no.

Both instances I just could never understand like why can't you just not?
