Why do ugly guys hate pretty girl who have confidence?

I was just talking to a guy who was trying to convince me that I'm ugly even though he doesn't know what I look like. I feel good about myself and I think I'm beautiful. If I heard someone say that I'd be happy for them, but he gaslights me and says I'm not calling you ugly but there might be other girls more beautiful than you. He doesn't know what I look like. This doesn't have anything to do with other women. I was just expressing how I feel. I think God made me beautiful.
