He's just pulling back because he's seen something in you he dosent like or is afraid of.

If you have weaponised something against him or he's seen some narcissistic traights in you, might just be taking a step back, seeing what you do, evaluating.

He's saying that apposed to challenging or entering into conflict with you, because he knows he can't win.

If you want to know what the issue is, you need to show he can be open with you without you turning on him.
