I asked out a guy first and got a late response?

I been liking this guy for a while and I see him in the hallways and events frequently, however I don’t know much about him. I’m more attracted for his looks. Today I asked him if he wanted to go out with me and he said yes and he seemed happy as he was smiling and wanted to exchange information. Me and my friends thought he would find me attractive too because we see him staring at me sometimes. However he didn’t text me until 12 hours later.. late at night.
So my question is
What does the late response usually mean?
And do guys like it when a girl asks them out first?

The late answer can mean a number of things such as

1. not interested, despite the fact that you think that he may be or
2. busy with something else that has priority over texting
3. being bad at texting and not knowing what to say or answer

Since you see that guy during breaks, why don't you ask him directly on a face-to-face basis rather than to text. This seems to be a general disease of youth nowadays to prefer to text rather than to converse when they have the opportunity.

I presume that guys do like when girls ask them out first because it gives them an opportunity to reject the girls and not only the other way round.

It's one day I don't think you should make any conclusions from this. If it's a consistent problem then it could be lack of interest or playing games but one day is not enough to start worrying about it.
