He says I saved him?

we’ve been together a while, but he keeps mentioning to me and his friends, that I “saved him, and he has a lot of respect for me” but doesn’t elaborate further. When I ask how I saved him, he says “you just did.”

What does this mean? How can a man be saved?

Yeah, I've said the same thing about my wife, and she's confused by it and asked me to stop saying it so I did, but here's what I meant: before I was with her, I was living a reckless, unhealthy life. I drank too much, stayed up to late, was achingly lonely, drove too fast, ate too much and got too angry. Adding all that together, I wasn't going to last long and I knew it. Having someone who care about me, made me care for myself.

Might have helped him emotionally give him hope or you just brought him joy at a good time when he needed it.

Sounds so closed off. Probably bigger issues are going to show themselves soon.
