He just made a joke is all. I'm not sure how appropriate or inappropriate for that matter you should find this joke when you've just (by thr sounds of it) started dating or seeing each other. I know I would not find it all that endearing and a bit forward and presumptuous. Then again you don't give a lot of other context. Maybe you've been out on quite a few dates and he has learned that you find such joking around funny and that's why he did it. Don't take it to mean anything other than a joke. Whether you see it as a good or bad joke is up to you. Perhaps he just had a poor idea at the time.
