What does it mean when a guy tells a woman he had a dream about her?

When I asked him what the dream was about he said it was spicy and laughed

Backstory: I dated this guy last summer then it turned into friends with benefits. (we have had sex) We were not getting along at all.

And he ended things with me in January and said he did not want to be intimate anymore because of how I had treated him. But that he would not dismiss the possibility of us being together in the future. Yet he needed to find his own way in life. And he did not want me to wait around for him.

But he and I have still been talking a little.

And when I messaged him last week saying this.

I think we met at a time when neither of us was truly ready for a long-term commitment, and we needed time apart to grow. I just feel like the timing wasn’t right for us. That’s why I won’t rule out being with you someday, regardless of who I meet. I don’t want you to think I’ll ever forget about you. (he loved reacted this message).

And then he replied with this

You actually appeared in my dream last night. Hope you’re having a good week so far.

Well, so in this context he is telling you about the dream for exactly the reasons you suspect he might be.

As a way to tell you he's still thinking about you, and has (at the very least) mixed feelings about what he wants to do (when it comes to you).

I know your whole situation cannot be accurately conveyed in any message description. My impression can easily be something that's totally not accurate to your actual situation in the real world:

There is a disconnect here.

You two have not worked out in any way when you were anything more than friends. The friends with benefits thing he ended with complaints about how he was treated. You both seem very much on the same page about it not being the right time for you two to work out.

That seems weird in light of all the "I'll always love you for the rest of my life' kinda stuff. It seems like on the one hand, this guy is your soulmate a cruel fate is keeping apart... but on the other hand, you two couldn't be friends with benefits without it being... a disaster.

Again, I'm not saying this is even accurate at all. You might read that, and be able to easily explain where I'm not seeing thing in the full context. You don't need to explain it to me to satisfy my need for things to make sense.

No need to defend yourself. I'm not accusing you of anything. I'm just pointing out my impression based on minimal information. It's just something to look at (for yourself) if what I pointed out really IS a disconnect in reality. If not, well hopefully you found it amusing.
