Why would a guy who has a girlfriend make frequent prolonged eye contact with another girl?

Why would he do this? especially if the girlfriend is relatively new (say 3 months). Should this be the honeymoon period of his relationship with her? and I mean prolonged regular eye contact, not just checking girls out which we know guys do.
