Guys, do you normally initiate conversation with women that you don't find attractive or aren't particularly friends with?

A reasonablly attractive male in my college class has initiated a short conversation with me, we're not friends though and I had never officially spoken to him before. The way it happened was, I was standing alone at the end of a staircase and he was coming down the stairs, I was awkward so I gave him a polite awkward smilebof acknowledgement, but then he asked me "How was your paper"(this was right after we wrote an exam) ... Mind you he hardly ever spoke to me before that and typically only speaks to the females he is friends with

Yeah but we're not friends, so I guess its normal with in context but not for him, he has a wide range of female friends that he talks to and he doesn't really initiate omcvos with other females let alone me, so I was kinda shocked when he spoke to me
