Guys do you use friends in common to approach a woman, or prefer going directly?

Every time I talk with one of my closest female friends, she connects to greet a guy friend by the phone. I've notice that its a pattern, so I'm starting to feel suspicious about it.

If we have an acquaintence in common, then use them - as long as they won't make you look like a fool.
If you don't have anyone in common, then defer to the direct approach.
