He acts like he barely knows me in group settings. When we do go out, it’s in dark places, places with very few people, and/or we aren’t there for very long (like fifteen minutes) and he is acting nervous and fidgety and looking around the entire time.

Truth is I can't say on my end of the internet. What you describe is that he gives the impression he doesn't know you in group settings and goes to places which are secluded. So it does give the impression he isn't exactly showing you off.

For my part I have never been with a girl I haven't been happy for people to know I am with. It is sort hypothetical to me what I'd do if I didn't want people to know. But it would be something like that I guess. That would also apply to a side chick as well. You don't it to get back to your main girl. But I haven't done that either.

He is trying to keep you hidden and there is a reason.

Yeah, I’ve never had a guy hide me (even the one that wanted to be casual never had a problem being out in public with me). This leads me to think it is your latter theory because there have been multiple times that he has gotten phone calls and he would get up and leave the room.

Indicative. If realistically you are OK or above in looks but he is hiding you than it is likely a side chick role. That is still a sweeper position because he doesn't want anyone to know.
