Why might a guy have no issues hanging out with you alone, or during an event, but otherwise seems to not want to?

We've known eachother for 18 years, & I get 𝙇𝙤𝙩𝙨 of mixed signals, & it's actually pretty rare that we hang out, but when we do (as far as just my question...)

By 𝙖𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙚, I mean usually at his house just talking and hanging out. MAYBE we'll get something to eat.. *𝙉𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙨ę𝙭𝙪𝙖𝙡 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩𝙨𝙤𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧* (even in conversation) has only ever told me "no" maybe once, to coming over. & he'll let me be there for hours at a time. (we've even gone on a 12 hour road trip, 1 way, to visit a mutual friend of ours, for a week, & he wanted to pay for everything)

Come the 𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨, like Bday parties, or my kids sporting games.. he shows up whenever he can- if work isn't in the way or something else going on.

But, occasionally, (& I've only asked a few times, usually last minute) to do something involving us just being out of the house doing something, sometimes still a group setting, sometimes not, or him come over to my place just to hang with the family if he has nothing to do. But there seems to always be an excuse, or avoidance, for those kinds of things.
*𝙉𝙊𝙏𝙀 (unless I'm just asking at the worst possible times, & it usually being last minute) but even so, he kind of gives of the "no thanks don't want to" energy.. in my opinion
