If he misses me why won’t he tell me?

I’ve been sleeping with this guy for 17 years on and off. He has a relationship and so do I. But we always come back to each other. He reaches out recently and asked where I was - this is code for I want to see you. I wasn’t close by and he ended the convo really quickly saying he was just wondering and was just curious and was just at work. He gave me every excuse and I said just say you miss me, say you want to see me. He wouldn’t and ghosted everything else I said - this is his pattern anytime I call him out on feelings he retreats. What makes this time particularly important is during a fight we had not too long ago he said he only wants to see me and only thinks of me when he’s inebriated- which he wasn’t this time or the last. This man will say thing and do anything even if it hurts me to make sure I don’t think he has feelings for me. The man has poured his heart out to me numerous times but then always back tracks after. So this week I messaged him saying I’m around - reversing things a bit. Instead of responding he looks at my stories on Instagram - another thing he does when he refuses to answer or address me. Why can’t he just say he misses me or he wants to see me why so much bs
