Birthday jokes work?

The first time I interacting with this beautiful man, I helped him move the floor cleaner out of his way at work. He gave me a thumbs up when it finally moved. I didn't think he spoke English so I never gave it a thought, except how adorable he is. The second time we interacted, he was stocking potatoes and while walking close behind me he said good morning to which I responded the same with a smile. Yesterday was my birthday. My bestie [F] wanted to cheer me up since we were at work and went up to to him and told it was my birthday. He never knew my name, as I wear my nametag flipped. So he asked her who [my name] was. He could have ignored her request. He could have said no. But he walked up to me with such a handsome smile and told me happy birthday. I smiled back and told him "oh thank you so much." He made a joke about does he get to wear a crown for his birthday when it comes around. [Bestie had gotten this pink bday girl crown for me to wear] I asked him when his was and he replied with "in 6 months" so I told him sure and asked what color would he like and he told me it was up to me to decide. The whole time we were smiling ear to ear and laughing. It felt like no one was around while we were beside the dairy coolers having this exchange. He went back to his stocking task and I went over to my bestie as she was talking to another coworker. I know it doesn't mean much to most but I think this conversation was an ice breaker. We definitely didn't take our eyes off each other the whole chat while our bodies were facing the other. We were close but not overly close. Like I could have reached out and touched him close. And before today we had caught each other looking at the other in passing before. Simple long glances. Not weird or stalkerish. My question is, can I use this as an ice breaker and continue talking to him to see if we could build something? Friends or even a love interest later on? And how? I'm shy. It seems he may be as well.

Wow.. I understand the sarcasm about us being face to face but i was trying to give a visual on the body language. Don't need to be an ass about it.
I'm not sure if he has a girlfriend. All I know is that he likes loud girls and has told another co worker he does like me. He also has been caught "checking me out" a handful of times. I'd like to be his friend but not sure how to approach this. We both are pretty shy towards one another.

Is that guy in a relationship or even married? Does he have a girlfriend (or boyfriend) or even a family?

You certainly don't want to be a home wrecker and by him not telling you if he is married or in a relationship or even if he has children. You stating that you did not even know that he spoke English leads me to believe that he could be a guest worker from abroad and possibly even a family waiting for him at home.

So, be very careful with that game you are playing with him. Men are such easy preys when it comes to having a "good time" with very inviting women.
