Guys, Why do my male friends try to talk me out of certain things?

First of all, I use the term "friend" loosely because it's always when there's a guy who likes me and also ex boyfriend would try to talk me out of things. For example, when I would talk about moving away elsewhere my ex (before we broke up) would tell me "I would stay in Saskatchewan, it's cheaper" or if I would mention working certain types of jobs he would tell me its a really hard job, etc. Also a guy I know who likes me said to me "I don't think you'd want to work on a farm, especially pig farms. They bite your ankles" and also said its a lot of work to work on a farm which I already know as I have relatives who farm. I've also been told by an older gentleman that "oh that won't work for you" when I said I could just walk when I was having car problems. I am pretty short, shorter than average, just barely 5 feet, but average build very feminine looking with long hair. My question is are they being protective of me? Or do they really just think I'm incapable due to being so short/small? I've driven forklift in past jobs, I even used to load and unload trucks as well, just because I'm a smaller female doesn't mean I can't do the work, but I'm not sure if that is what they think or if they are just being protective.
