“A woman he’s never dated”, so there is or was an opportunity for them to date, and they haven’t. My question to that would be why. I mean, if she is correct about her assessment of the situation and he is actually being possessive, then why hasn’t he asked her out or vice versa? To me, that’s being intentionally done, either by him or her, in which case if I were the woman in question I wouldn’t concern myself with him “acting” possessive. I wouldn’t entertain it whatsoever.
A man might act possessive over a woman he has never dated due to unexpressed romantic feelings, a deep sense of entitlement, or personal insecurity. Even without a relationship, his behavior often stems from viewing people as property rather than respecting personal boundaries.
He may have built up an idealised version of your relationship in his head. Either that or he is just a little stupid.

He likes the ego supply he gets from her , but doesn’t like her enough to chose her
Similar age probably romantic sentiments, younger could be a sister and older could be a mother/grandmother roles
